Social Security: Here’s Why You Might Get Two or Three Checks This Month

Certain Social Security recipients could see two or even three payments this May, depending on the type of benefits they receive and the timing of their regular disbursements.

Each month, the Social Security Administration (SSA) distributes retirement, disability, and survivor benefits to more than 70 million Americans. As of March 2025, around 60 million were receiving retirement and survivor benefits, while approximately 8 million were collecting disability benefits.

What You Need to Know

Social Security payments are typically staggered throughout the month, based on beneficiaries’ birth dates and whether they receive additional support, such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI). SSI is designed to assist older adults, individuals with disabilities, and those with limited financial means.

This month includes a rare scheduling situation: two SSI payments will be issued due to the standard June payment date falling on a weekend. According to the SSA, if the first of the month lands on a weekend or a federal holiday, SSI payments are made on the last business day before the month begins. That means May will include an early disbursement for June.

“We do this to ensure you’re not financially impacted and don’t have to wait beyond the first to receive your payment,” the SSA explained in a previous blog post. “This does not count as a duplicate payment, so there’s no need to report it.”

Who Might Receive Three Payments?

Some recipients could receive three payments in May. This would apply to individuals who:

  • Receive both SSI and Social Security retirement benefits
  • Began collecting retirement benefits before May 1997

These beneficiaries would get:

  • SSI on May 1
  • Retirement benefits on May 2
  • A second SSI payment on May 30 (for June)

The SSA advises recipients to wait three full business days before contacting them if a payment is late. Keep in mind, weekends and holidays don’t count as business days.

May 2025 Payment Schedule

Here’s the full breakdown of when payments will go out this May:

  • Thursday, May 1 – SSI payments
  • Friday, May 2 – Retirement benefits for pre-May 1997 recipients and those who also receive SSI
  • Wednesday, May 14 – Benefits for those born between the 1st and 10th of the month
  • Wednesday, May 21 – Benefits for birthdays falling between the 11th and 20th
  • Wednesday, May 28 – Payments for those born between the 21st and 31st
  • Friday, May 30 – Advance SSI payments for June

How Much Are the Benefits?

As of January 2025, the average monthly Social Security retirement benefit stands at $1,976. Maximum benefit amounts vary based on when you start collecting:

  • $2,831 at age 62
  • $4,018 at full retirement age (67)
  • $5,108 at age 70

SSI payments in 2025 can reach up to $967 for individuals and $1,450 for couples. However, actual payments depend on factors like income, living arrangements, and other eligibility details.
